“He used your birthday as the combination to open the safe,” Lala said, breaking the silence once Lorenzo had finished reading the letter. “Thank goodness for Tania. She was the one reminded me your birthday was the day after Darell’s. So you know I still have your money. I didn’t spend one cent of it.” Lala said, walking over to a safe she had in a hallway closet. “When I figured out the combination all I wanted to do was get out of town and start my life over far away from all the bad memories and hell in New York. I wasn’t sure who would try to kill me first, you or Alexus so I took Tania and ran.”
“Damn,” was all Lorenzo could say at first. Everything Darell wrote in the letter made sense. Deep down inside Lorenzo always felt that killing Darell was the wrong move. It was funny how Brice and a couple more people from his crew had said that Darell was stealing money. They had beaten Darell up so bad before he was brought to him that the only thing Darell could do was plead for his life.
The whole time money was coming up missing it was Alexus who was the one taking it. Darell was only trying to expose her, but instead had the tables turned against him. Only to then be killed by the one person he was looking out for. Alexus and Brice knew that Lorenzo wasn’t going to ask too many questions when it came down to somebody stealing from him and they definitely knew that their word was going to hold more weight than Darell’s.
Lala walked over with the bag and placed it on the floor next to Lorenzo. “Based off this letter I’m positive it was Alexus who killed Darell. I’m so sorry Lorenzo that I ever believed that you would take Tania’s father from her. You deserve to hate me because I am responsible for you spending time in jail and for hurting the woman that you loved. I heard about Dior’s suicide. I’m sure you partly blame me for that too.” Lala swallowed hard as guilt flooded her.
Lorenzo stood there in silence. He was starting to feel the shame of killing an innocent man, taking him away from his girl and his daughter. It was crazy because Darell was his friend. It was evident from the letter that his loyalty was with Lorenzo. Lorenzo couldn’t help but feel utter contempt for allowing Alexus to manipulate him like this.
“Darell didn’t deserve...he didn’t deserve to go out like that,” Lorenzo said as his own guilt got the best of him. Part of Lorenzo wanted to tell Lala that he was the one who killed Darell, but then he realized that no matter how he tried to justify it, Lala would never understand. She was from the hood but she still didn’t understand the streets. “Just take good care of my goddaughter. Let her know that her Uncle Lorenzo loves her very much,” Lorenzo said, walking towards the door.
